BELARUS IS NUMBER ONE EXPORTER OF POTASSIUM ALREADY SOLD TO SOMEBODY ELSE

Supreme Leader Lukashenko has received wonderful news: Premier Trump wants Belarusian potash.
For years, Belarus has kept fax machine on. Lukashenko has written letter to Premier Trump. Letter is now 1,400 pages and still not ready to send. Yuri has checked telephone line so often that telephone company asked him to stop.
Now Premier Trump is discussing massive deal. He says Belarusian potash will cost substantially less than Canadian potash. Lukashenko is pleased. Lukashenko has been waiting for this moment.
Yuri prepares banner:
Olga looks at banner. “Potash,” she says, “is not elemental potassium.”
“Premier Trump did not ask for chemistry lesson,” Lukashenko says.
Then Yuri brings ledger.
There is brief silence. Lukashenko reads first page. He reads second page, although answer is already on first.
“Where is potash?” he asks.
“Sold,” Yuri says.
“How much?”
“All of it is contracted.”
“Check other page.”
“That is other page.”
This is difficult moment in Belarusian-American relations. Premier Trump has finally come to Belarus with serious proposal, and Belarus must explain that having valuable commodity is different from having valuable commodity available for sale. Lukashenko understands distinction. He wishes Premier Trump had called last year.
Yes. Belarus has potash. This is established.
According to Lukashenko, existing output is contracted. Yuri has checked ledger twice. He is now checking whether word massive appears in any contract. It does not create additional potash when he writes it in margin.
Premier Trump says deal is being worked on. Price, volume, delivery schedule, and completed agreement have not been announced. Olga says these are useful parts of deal.
Possibly. Lukashenko has not declared that no potash can ever be sold to United States. He has said Belarus does not have additional volumes for Western markets everyone is suddenly discussing. Yuri asks that this distinction remain in print.
Removing banner would be defeatist.
Lukashenko sits with working glass and studies map. Belarus is far from American farms. Canada is next door to them. Between Belarus and farms are borders, ports, ships, contracts, and several governments who have opinions about Belarus. Premier Trump sees lower number on proposed price. Lukashenko sees ledger.
“Maybe,” Lukashenko says, “we sell him ledger.”
Olga does not laugh. Yuri writes ledger not for sale on back of banner, just in case.
For one afternoon, Lukashenko had something Premier Trump wanted badly enough to announce to whole world. This is more than fax machine has accomplished in thirty years. He does not wish to spoil it with arithmetic. Arithmetic, however, has arrived without invitation and taken chair beside Olga.
Yuri leaves banner up. He crosses out two words and adds three:
