Fox News Is Not Defending Masculinity. It Is Defending Male Fragility.
Jesse Watters and Caroline Sunshine confuse strength with hierarchy, accountability with persecution, and manhood with Republican obedience.
Fox News says masculinity is under attack. What it means is that men are being criticized, women are speaking, and some people no longer dress or behave according to Jesse Watters's preferred casting call.
That is not the collapse of manhood. It is the collapse of automatic deference.
In a recent segment, Watters and Republican strategist Caroline Sunshine turned a Democratic primary discussion into a carnival of grievance. They mocked women for wearing glasses. They sneered at theater majors. They treated feminism as emasculation, allegations of sexual misconduct as something men are merely “MeTooed” with, and the presence of female candidates as evidence that strong men have been pushed aside.
Then came the sales pitch: strong men are on their side. Strong men belong to the Republican Party. Strong men will “lead the women.”

Sunshine says Democrats took “the one masculine guy” they had and “MeTooed him,” adding that this is “every man's worst fear.”
No. A decent man's worst fear should be hurting someone, failing someone who trusted him, or becoming the sort of man other people have to warn one another about.
A false accusation can destroy a life, and no honest person should pretend otherwise. But that is not what this segment argues. It treats accusation itself as emasculation. It transforms accountability into persecution before the facts are even examined. The man is presumed authentic because he performs masculinity correctly. The woman becomes a political weapon because she spoke.
That is not due process. It is tribal immunity with chest hair glued to it.
Masculinity does not require ignoring coercion, abuse, or sexual misconduct. “Boys will be boys” is not a defense. It is cowardice wearing a varsity jacket.
Fox says real men think for themselves, then spends the segment telling men exactly which party they must support, which women they should distrust, which identities they should ridicule, and which grievances they should purchase by the month.
What is masculine about being herded into the Republican Party by a news channel you have to pay to watch?
Vote this way. Fear these people. Laugh at that woman. Mock those glasses. Distrust feminism. Treat trans people as a punchline. Believe that men lead and women follow. Keep watching after the commercial break.
That is not rugged individualism. It is ideological subscription masculinity.

I served with strong men. Some were conservative. Some were liberal. Some were gay. Some were quiet, awkward, bookish, divorced, grieving, frightened, funny, or deeply imperfect.
Their strength was not measured by whether they mocked women on television. It was measured by whether they did their jobs, protected the people beside them, admitted mistakes, and kept control of themselves when things went bad.
The military does not work because everyone performs the same costume of masculinity. It works when people accept responsibility, follow lawful orders, master their craft, and refuse to abandon one another. A loud mouth can be useful. So can a quiet professional. Neither is made stronger by contempt.
Patriotism is not partisan property either. A man does not surrender his spine because he votes Democratic, supports reproductive freedom, respects gay and trans Americans, or believes women can lead him. He is not less masculine because Fox cannot sell him a permission slip.
Sunshine repeatedly invokes the slogan that strong men create good times and weak men create hard times. It sounds profound because it arrives wearing work boots. It is still a fortune cookie for authoritarian romantics.
Strong men have started wars, wrecked economies, built dictatorships, committed massacres, and made spectacularly stupid decisions. So have weak men. History is not a gym meme.
Strength without judgment is merely force. Strength without restraint is danger. Strength without accountability is how institutions rot while everyone salutes the wallpaper.
The most revealing line comes when Sunshine says strong men will “lead the women.” There it is. The supposed defense of men ends exactly where these arguments always end: women beneath them.
Apparently, masculinity can survive war, poverty, grief, fatherhood, failure, and fear, but not a woman with political opinions and unconventional eyeglasses.
Watters closes by telling a person named Ashley that she is welcome in the men's room because he “will not assault” her.
Consider what has happened there. The man presenting himself as a defender of masculinity treats the basic promise not to assault someone as a punchline and a personal favor.
Not assaulting people is not masculine generosity. It is the lowest legal and moral expectation we place on any adult. A man does not deserve applause for maintaining control of his body in a restroom. He deserves suspicion if he thinks restraint is remarkable enough to announce on television.
A man who cannot survive criticism was never being emasculated. He was being exposed.
Keep the Trucks. Drop the Contempt.
Masculinity is not threatened by feminism, women in office, gay men, trans people, odd glasses, theater majors, public grocery stores, or men who vote Democratic.
It is threatened by cowards who need everyone beneath them before they can feel tall.
Keep the trucks. Keep the guns. Keep the beer, the weight room, the rough jokes, the patriotism, and the stubborn streak. Keep the parts of manhood that build competence, loyalty, endurance, and courage.
Drop the bullshit idea that strength requires contempt.
Masculinity is not a party platform, a cable package, or a hierarchy with women at the bottom. It is what you do when nobody is clapping, nobody is afraid of you, and you are still expected to act like a decent man.
