Enough with the Purity Tests

We’re in a fight for our lives against Donald Trump and his authoritarian machine, yet some of us waste precious energy devouring our own over ideological nitpicks. Wake up: Trump is the real threat, not the flawed warrior in the trenches beside you.

Enough with the Purity Tests

There’s a growing problem in our political and activist spaces: the endless purity tests that turn potential allies into pariahs. It’s exhausting to watch good people, people actually trying to make a difference, torn down because their past or their phrasing didn’t meet today’s ever-shifting standard of perfection. Enough with the purity tests, people. We’re in a fight for our lives against Donald Trump and his authoritarian machine, yet some of us waste precious energy devouring our own over ideological nitpicks. Wake up: Trump is the real threat, not the flawed warrior in the trenches beside you.

Chairman Paul Birdsong’s Stand

The latest example is Chairman Paul Birdsong. Whether or not you agree with every choice he’s made, it’s hard to deny that he’s been putting in the work to advocate for justice and equity, leading a revived Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and confronting ICE head-on with armed resolve. Yet some corners of the internet seem more interested in digging through his history for missteps, questioning his rapid rise, alleged gang past, and unpolished edge, branding him a “provocateur” unfit for the cause. Bullshit. He’s out there risking it all while you’re tweeting purity checklists. Trump’s oligarchs cheer as we fracture.

Sarah McBride’s Wake-Up Call

Sarah McBride, the trailblazing trans congresswoman, slammed Democrats for losing voters through purity politics and online shaming that paints them as “assholes”. Once hailed as a hero, she now faces leftist backlash for pragmatic stances on trans rights and coalition-building. Defiant truth: Nuance builds power. Trump guts protections while we purity-test our champions

Maurice Mitchell’s Warning

Veteran organizer Maurice Mitchell called out post-#MeToo and BLM infighting, where identity obsessions splintered coalitions. We need to be honest with ourselves. Who among us can look in the mirror and say we’ve always been the person we are now? Progressives demand flawless saints, ignoring Trump’s Supreme Court stacking the deck against us forever. Growth is not just possible; it’s the entire point of doing this work.

Channel the Fight Right

Accountability matters, yes. But so does perspective, proportion, and grace. These purity rituals aren’t justice; they’re suicide. Trump rigs elections, guts civil rights, and builds camps, but we bicker over pasts no one escapes clean. Stop treating imperfection as disqualification and remember that progress is made by humans: flawed, learning, passionate humans. If someone is trying to help, maybe we should let them. Channel that fire at the regime. Rally behind imperfect fighters like Birdsong. Victory demands unity and perseverance, not perfection.
